Brownfield Redevelopment
Cleanup and integrated ‘Brownfield’ redevelopment of the former DuPont property on Kennedy Blvd. in East Chicago, Indiana is underway. The redeveloper, East Chicago Gateway Partners, has retained, New York-based Impact Environmental to perform the USEPA-required remedy to protect the local residents and the surrounding natural resources. Brownfield redevelopment will combine remedial processes with construction activities to provide economies that will expedite construction of a new warehouse facility.
State-of-Art Logistics Center
The East Chicago Gateway Partners redevelopment project will be called, “The East Chicago Logistics Center”. Phase 1 of the project will involve expedited construction of a 1.1 million square-foot warehouse and will be followed by support warehouse space in future phases, as remediation progresses.
City Revitalization
The logistics center is intended to benefit from the property’s proximity to Interstates 90 and 65, the Gary International Airport, and the skilled local workforce. The East Chicago Logistics Center is expected to create over 300 construction jobs, 1,000 permanent careers, and 1,000 city-wide multiplier jobs. In addition, it will grow the East Chicago tax base. East Chicago Gateway Partners views itself and, individually, the residents and the City Government as STAKEHOLDERS in this project.
Beautification Green Initiative
This new construction creates the opportunity for beautification and maintenance of the property with viable plantings and grounds. 195 acres, which includes a buffer zone, in the eastern portion of the property will be dedicated to The Nature Conservancy. This area of dune and swale land on the banks of the Grand Calumet River will be a haven for local flora and fauna. In support of the health and safety of the community, limited portions of the ECGP property will be used to support the USS Lead Site responsible parties in their continued cleanup of Riley Park soils. Bringing renewed energy and growth to the city of East Chicago.
